How to Make Sure You Only Hire the Best
The Mason Contractors Association of America states that all qualified masons are trained to work with various materials that include tiles, natural rock, clay, and concrete brick. However, not all masons have the same degree of experience and skill, which is why it is so important to perform research before hiring any potential masonry contractor. The following are some questions you should consider asking each contractor.
Do they have any mason certifications?
It is important to make sure any potential hire has been certified by the MCAA. Also, masons in some areas are required to have a current general contractor’s license.
Do they have experience working with a particular material?
Like every other profession, masons do have their own unique specialties. For example, not every mason can work with natural stone.
Are they experienced cutting and laying patterns?
If you have something specific in mind and want to fit various types of stone or brick together, make sure they can do it.
When do they expect to complete the job?
It is always good to have a plan in place. While it may take longer, at least you know approximately how long your project will take.
What do you need to do to prepare my home?
Some masons may want you to do some prep work before they start work. So remember to ask this.
Do they have references from other customers?
Check examples of each masonry contractor, and speak to previous clients in order to determine their level of satisfaction. Ask if the mason completed the job within the stated time frame, and in a professional manner.
Ask to see proof of their insurance?
Anyone can say they are insured, however, it is entirely different when they are unable to show proof.
What is their payment schedule?
Cost is obviously important, and some may ask to be paid half up front, this covers the cost of materials, however, set dates for paying the remainder. Withhold the final payment until you are satisfied with the work.
